As part of the Torrance Unified School District efforts to improve college and career readiness for all middle school students, Jefferson Middle School will be hosting its own JMS College Night on February 28th at 6:30 pm in our cafeteria. We will also have a special College Week during March 12 – 16th at JMS.

Our student council students have enthusiastically spear-headed this effort under the direction of their advisor, Mr. Cheney and our school counselor, Ms. Balooch by picking a college of their choice to display on presentation boards for the rest of the school community. During our regularly schedule Book of the Month reading time, teachers will facilitate mini-lessons on introducing JMS students to greater college awareness.

  • For our 6th grade students it will include making connections to what they may already know about college and introducing them to why it’s important to their success in their future.
  • For our 7th graders, they will investigate deeper into different aspects such as financial aid, tuition, and admission requirements.
  • Lastly for all our 8th grade students, they will not only research 2 different colleges, but also will be encouraged to visit a local university before their freshman year in high school.

“The results of The Forgotten Middle suggest that, in the current educational environment, there is a critical defining point for students in the college and career readiness process – one so important that, if students are not on target for college and career readiness by the time they reach this point, the impact may be nearly irreversible. We must therefore also focus on getting more students on target for college and career readiness by the end of eighth grade, so that they are prepared to maximize the benefits of high school.” - ACT, 2010

PARENT CONNECT !!!

Parents, remember your child’s grades and assignments are available on Parent Connect. It is a wonderful way to access your child’s progress on assignments, tests, quizzes, and projects. You can access Parent Connect through our website at www.jefferson.tusd.org. If you have lost you Parent Connect password, please contact the office and we will be happy to supply you with that information.

Your child’s attendance plays a pivotal role in his/her success in school. A student who comes to school has greater access to the content and the curriculum. Please continue to ensure your child attends school on a regular basis. For those students who miss school, they must either bring a note to clear their absence or a phone call should be made to Ms. Christina Martinez, our new Attendance Clerk in the main office. Additionally, those students who come in tardy must stop by the Attendance Office and get a tardy slip prior to going to class.

Thank you again for all of your support.
